Pushing ridiculous surf images around a page in combination with text is a fulfilling occupation. Its a game of tetris on crack. But when the crack wears off. It becomes a cold hard game of right or wrong. And its here that a good graphic hack shows his metal.
Steeled with resolve and keen attitude of the fuck you kind the first spread locks into place nice and sweet like. Happy. Text reads well and images are playing a good roll...Not fighting but helping. No conflicts on the opening spread. Great

Good morning.
I thought I would let you in on the Monday morning I had.
I was let into the house by the pretty lady who smells nice. My little brown girlfriend Dora came out too. She gave me a couple of licks cos thats what she does...she is cool.

I went looking for my boss. He usually is lying on his blanky in his room early in the morning. I decided to change tactic today and do my stealth walk...and engage my creepy stare. (usually I lick his face or any exposed part of the body). The creepy stare worked cos after a while he opened his eyes and started yelling "outside. Outside!" I am not allowed in that room. so I retreat a couple of steps and lie down. That always stops the yelling. I have a tactic though. As I start lying down I take a few quick steps that get me further into the room...so I am basically in the room after he yells outside...heh heh.

Becuase its been raining I havent gone for a run in a long time. So it was a beautiful morning this morning and was lucky enough to be taken down to the park to smell who had been there recently. My boss took me all the way to that old house that has the rat holes around it....One of these days I am gonna catch one of em oh yes!

Anyways after a quik run I had to go back cos the boss look kinda anxious. So we trotted home.

Monday is garbage collection day. the boss man takes a quick walk around and collects all mine and Dora's crap. He chucks em in the bin along with the rest of the rubbish and it is collected that morning.

He has a special poo bin... over night the poo bin had got rained on and well the lid wasn't on properly and the packet of poo...even though it was tied nice and tight got wet and it basically became a poo slush puppy in a bag (excuse the pun) My boss didn't know this. so as he picked it up he got some poo syrup all down his leg and into his slop. He didn't look happy. The pretty lady just laughed.....

So everything was tidied up. And boss man went into the house to do whatever he does. Meanwhile I ate the socks that he had left in his running shoes at the front door. He hates it when I do that cos he yells at me and smacks my nose. But socks are tasty. I cant help myself. And today I had a double serving of socks. and yes when I poo they come out of my bum. Little sock parcels for my boss.

Anyways thats it. They left me and Dora again to dig some new holes and bark at anyone who comes close to the gate.

Until they come back and we can do it all again...Happy days!

Sometimes, just sometimes you have a turnaround and realise that to make a spiffing magazine you are gonna miss a few sessions and a lot of sleep. It all adds sweetner points to your next session. But The best part of deadline is buying the beers and getting fucked up. Then sitting watching TV blazed and trying to decipher exactly how fucking useless CSI Miami is...And why the frik would they make a CSI Las Vegas when CSI miami is sooo good. I dunno.

Dear boss man.
Thanks for taking me all the way up to Westville to have my hair cut and my nails trimmed. I must admit...those dreadlocks on my ears were getting pretty big and although it did look like I was wearing earrings...they really weren't my style. Also now I can walk stealthy like around the house without my massive talons making that annoying klinking sound on the floor. This now enables me to sneak up on you and lick you in the face while you are sleeping. Ha ha who’s sorry now...

I would like to apologise for slobbering all over your rear windows in your car. I am really starting to enjoy these car trips and the smells that come with them. especially after being washed and cut. It just feels sooooo good that I can’t help myself.

So as a thank you token. I will promise to jump on you with my dirty fakkin paws when I next see you. And...! If I feel really thankful I will leave you a big prezzie on the lawn somewhere for you to find. (and I am usually really thankful around 2pm.)

Sheesh so this weekend we were busy.
Zigzag was all over the place (scuse the pun) We hosted 2 awards evenings and there was a major comp in town. All the boyeees represented.
The SA Surf Awards went off really well. All the blood sweat and tears paid off. I got my wife to pat me on the back...(and scratch ma belly)

We went to the SA Surf Awards after party...at Czar. Must say MV was cranking some serious gangsta shit when we got there. Was stomping...and then for some silly reason he caved and started playing the kak deep house/lounge junk that Durban cant seem to shake. I mean fak! Who really likes that music? Its like looking at shite wallpaper but for your ears. That bummed me out big time so I told my Charlene sorry we is outta here.

If any one can tell me why Durban has this fascination for crap deep house bollocks...pls let me. There are a handful of good parties around but please...Hows some drum and bass parties? Huh? Are people scared? Pussies.

surf when stoked

When there is a run of good waves...Like we have had recently. It does weird psychological things to me.
I am a frother naturally.
This one time back in band camp when I was at the Bong Pro. I paddled out on my own in the morning at Magnas. It was perfect 4-5ft and just running. I had to duck a few waves to get out...but just seeing those empty runners so perfectly peeling almost fried my circuits. I couldn't believe how lucky I was and how perfect the waves were....my preciousssssssssssss.

But back to my main train: I have been surfing pretty much non stop for the last 2 weeks (except over the last 3 days of our deadline) So you get a really good session. You are tired. You get some brekkie in you then go out again....then get really tired and go in for some lunchin munchin. Now I am pretty much surfed out. But in the evening it is still good. My natural instinct is to go surfing. But the stoke isnt there. I have scratched that itch. It becomes a bit of a mental tug of war.

This weekend. I just decided to relax. Take it easy. After a really long session I thought it best to enjoy land for a while and I was stoked at my decision. I chilled with my wife and enjoyed the day. Even knowing that there were waves didn't bother me at all. In fact it made me happier that there were waves and people were on it.

Moral of my ramble is...If you surf when you aren't stoked then you bring bad vibes to the water and start flooking people and basically act like a doosh.
If you surf when you are super amped then you always have a good session even when its on an onshore day.

Yeah waves have been good. Loving it!

Sometimes when we finish up a mag here at Zag, after the sweat tears and bum fumes...I wonder if its all worth it...
The Zag team has quiet a few magazines under our belt. I would say that we kinda got a good thing going. Each of us pulls our weight and still get time to enjoy a arvi surf session.
When we get the mag back from the printers it is one of the best feelings...firstly the newly printed smell is just frikkin awesome...bury your nose in a new Zag and take a sniff....how good is that!
Also checking the image quality what came out good and what didn't. Its always good to dissect the mag. Also we get a bit of down time after the mag comes out, we get a few days to get our humour back...get some waves and beers and it all starts again.

The thing about making a surf mag (or most mags for that matter) is that you have to love the process as much as you love surfing...it shows in the mag.

Speaking of which...how good were the waves on the weekend? fun in the sun

Went to watch Faithless in Joburg on the weekend.
Sheesh those Jobrgers are up for it. Always.
The Concert organisation was piss poor. But Faithless delivered. Admittedly it was a really short gig.
It got me thinking about dance music vs live rock acts. In all honesty I reckon Faithless could have pre-recorded their whole set and then just pitched up and acted...which they didn't. I reckon the set was 70% live. But I started thinking at what stage would you not want to watch a live act if you knew it was all pre-recorded.

Its all about being live and direct. tha'ts the key! All that this mp3 internet exchanged music is doing is increasing the value of the live act. Yes its the business of going live. Got to get up of yr arse and do it.
